She Keeps Bees interview

She Keeps Bees
Blues-rock ντουέτο από το Brooklyn.

How did the name come about? She Keep Bees came from my last name. (Larrabee) not too exciting. but i loved the idea of bees... they are the life blood of every living thing. music is my bee.

Last time I checked your music, Jessica was solo. Now, for the new album, you are a duet. How has this affected the music? it has allowed me to grow into the musician i always wanted to be. my first instrument was drums... so it just made sense to find that person. andy and i learned from each other and grew very organically into our current set up. i feel more brave as a duet... so the music has turned a bit more aggressive... more from the gut.
"Nests", your new album. Tell me a few things about it.
i wrote the songs for "Nests" as we recorded, so that was different from our first album, "Minisink Hotel". we just tried to capture a true honest raw performance. we recorded drums and guitar live. some songs all live. everything was done in our apartment in Brooklyn, engineered by Andy.

What do you wish to accomplish with your music? Is the heavy blues/rock the sound that fits best your lyrics or does the sound come first and then, the lyrics? i want to tour. i love the connection and energy from the audience. hearing music heals me, so it's a beautiful thing to be a part of that exchange. the sound comes... then lyrics form... like photographs i suppose.

Why are you self-releasing the album? we are open to labels. as of right now we've been the label and just out source... it's the american way! :)

In your myspace influences, you mention (almost) only classic artists. How come? i feel like what i grew up listening to has shaped me and my ear. truthfully i'm influenced by everything. i like to think closer to the source (older artists)

Writers always love to make comparisons: so, i've read comparisons of you to Chan Marshall, P.J.Harvey and Fiona Apple. Who would you like to be compared? ahhh... well... i feel like all those ladies are important... so it's good. do i hear the similarity? not really... maybe i'm too close. ladies with brown hair and low voices. just add me to the list. :)
i'd like to be compared...or aspire to be a mix between ... Millie Jackson and Gilda Radner... both hysterical performers. i think being good performer is a really magical gift. to make a room full of people laugh and feel connected is wonderful and so healing too. can't be so serious.

Any other Brooklyn bands we should google?
