Oi Va Voi live in Greece this May

Oi Va Voi return to Greece for 2 shows this May, 13th @ Kyttaro and 14th @ Block 33

Back in the day (i think it was 2003), they had released their amazing blend of music that was their first album and folks over at Virgin Greece were trying to make them happen. So, some production company brought them over for a show, but is so happened that on the same day, Susheela Raman (i think) was playing in Athens, too, so both shows were not crowded. Anyway, Oi Va Voi are a band that guarantees a great music night out.

Christian Scott - Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

“the most important innovator of his generation”
“jazz’s young style god”

Nephew of Donald Harrison, Jr., co-worker of Prince, Jill Scott, Mos Def, DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Grammy nominee for (2006 LP) "Rewind That", stylish as they come, Christian Scott is only 27 and already has descriptions as the above under his belly. His new album "Yesterday You Said Tomorrow" is out in the USA this March 30th on Concord.

The album is obviously trying to match albums of the 60s: they brought in famous sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder, who has worked with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock back in the day. Thus, the sound is very similar, a typical style is everywhere, there are social issues being addressed (racism in "K.K.P.D", gay marriage in "The Last Broken Heart"). The album goes beyond (but not far from) jazz, by adding elements: e.x. a cover of "Erasure" by Thom Yorke (Radiohead) is included.

If you are a jazz fan, this album will convince you. And if you are not, you will become one.

Biri Biri - Biri Biri

Biri Biri have made a hell of a good album (which btw, sounds even better live, where they play covers, too). A hell of a good album, I say. This is good fusion as we know it: damn funk, intelligent and very fun, the musicians know the deed, lots of instruments (sax, trumpet, bongo, cowbell, cymball, drums, bass, etc), it's upbeat (mostly in the second part of the album), it's the bomb, i tell ya. Music to move the body and get the chicks to the next drink. These guys must hit on chicks all summer long down at their base, Crete island. "Killing Me Woman" is my favourite track.

The album is out on
Spinalonga recs (big ups for the guys), so, go fetch. Money well spent.
