Maps And Atlases - Perch Patchwork
5 EPs in 5 years were more than enough, so here's the debut album "Perch Patchwork" by Chicago folk-rock band Maps And Atlases, out on Barsuk Records today.The album grabs you from the start: it's in the lush production, with the percussion all over the songs, the toys- instruments, horns, strings: the band had fun in the studio, for sure. It's not only fun, though, as with many bands these last couple of years: they also have the songs to show. True songcrafter's songs. For the fans of their EPs, this album might sound simple. More indie.
But "Perch Patchwork" is a complete album, well thought of and with a clear, good reason running through it: an album you want to go back to. Time will only do good to this album.

Jim Guthrie - Now More Than Ever
"Now More Than Ever" made Jim Guthrie an indie-pop/folk sensation back in 2003. Everybody was drewling about the album, back in the day, at a time when Canada was sth like the new interesting music nest. After Juno and all the movies, this sound is so familiar and typical, but in 2003, it sounded different.
The difference of the album is in the strings. Strings all over the place, lush as pop can be, producer Andy Magoffin (who has, basically, affected the Canada indie scene as much as the next one, as he has worked with Hidden Cameras, Royal City, Constantines, Great Lake Swimmers) made a brilliant effort, transforming ballads to folk music. Trobadour songs, given the strings treatment, sound different, you know? Maybe this album is better listened too in songs, as it sounds too relaxed and too peaceful, but in the end, it is a good album.
Guthrie (who has since been in bands Islands and Royal City) found in Magoffin the helping hand he needed for his music to blossom and managed to deliver a record that is very much like a soundtrack. The sound leads you to visuals: it's all about the little stories with a catch, presented in a serene sound environment. From that point, it was easy to go the other way and get all these indie movies with ost's filled with sounds like "Now More Than Ever".
"Now More Than Ever" is being re-released in an extended cd version with 12 more songs and vinyl.

Tango With Lions - Right From The Start
This is the first video of Tango With Lions, from their debut "Verba Time", out now on Inner-Ear Records (buy here). It was shot in Rio, Patras by Andreas Labropoulos and Andreas Mitrelis.
I presented TwL a few years back, at the old blog, apotis4stis5. Couldn't see then where their sound was heading, but could see there was sth in "Red and Yellow Rooms". Nice turn of events, hope Kat goes the distance. Sound good, looks good, too.

Monika - Exit
Monika's first album "Avatar" immense success caused emotions in Greece: an english singing Greek artist hadn't broken into mainstream since forever and, against the ~20.000 copies sold and the unbelievable hype surrounding them, words and words were written and spoken about her. The audience obviously loved her (thus the sales). But some really mean things were said from people who should think before eating their tail, and yes, I am talking about the majors and the indie bands. Stupid morons.
Imo, she has talent, but I would point out that she differs in the point of view: her album was different that any other "indie" greek album, it just sounded differently. Good or bad, it doesn't matter, because it found it's way to people's ears and THEY JUST LIKED IT. And that is what it's all about.
Now, Monika has prepared her second album, called "Exit", in Germany and it will be out next Wednesday. She remains on the same road she went down on her debut, while pushing towards an even more pompous result. A song like "Yes I Do" is a good example: there are certainly some ideas in the production, like the use of traditional greek instruments, the contradiction between the voices, the effort for a new result.
