Mgmt - Congratulations

"Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us".
These are the words of MGMT on their website, where they are streaming their new album "Congratulations". I don't believe them about the free thing, but who am I to say.

The album is produced by Sonic Boom, my favorite musician ever. I have spent days with Spacemen 3 albums, so I couldn't wait for his touch on Mgmt's music. The outcome is exactly what I should have expected: the Mgmt duo and Sonic Boom have dissected sounds from pop music from the 60s and on and they have created songs that sound just about right, if you compare them to a typical music piece of the music they wanted to reproduce.

It is obvious that they have worked a lot in the studio, it is obvious that they are clever and enjoy finding and reproducing jems, it is obvious that they are music lovers and don't take themselves too seriously. All these are great. I can't say I like the album, though I like most of the tracks: they are pure pop in the sense of irrelevant lyrics that go from lover's words to craftsmen references (e.x. a refrain with the words "Brian Eno").

"Congratulations" is coming out April 23rd, but you can listen to it now, here
