Sebastian Tellier, Dan Bejar (of Destroyer) and Gruff Rhys are a league of their own. These guys have mastered the craft of songwriting to such a level, that they can just pull off whatever they choose: in the current case, Gruff Rhys (of the Super Furry Animals) chose to create the perfect pop album and he has accomplished just that. "Hotel Shampoo", his 3rd solo effort, is Beatles and Elvis Costello and 60s garage-pop and saliva-in-your-mouth pop and picking up chicks pop and lush pop and indie pop and whatever you can think of that was and is pop to this day. 13 tracks, all a true trip in pop history. I could go on for a while, but it will all come down to: it's only the beginning of and we already have 2 great albums for 2011: Destroyer's Kaputt and Gruff's Shampoo Hotel. Thumbs up!
Btw, the title comes from shampoo bottles and other hotel memorabiblia that Gruff has picked up in his year's of touring.
"Hotel Shampoo" is out on Valentine's day.
