Esben And The Witch - Violet Cries

If there is one notion that marked a decade like the 00s, it's that there are no more big ideas in music, except than that production is everything, in the way that Artaud used lights in theater so many decades ago (yes, this is too much for you, dear reader, but you are reading sth about Esben And The Witch, so get over yourself). A decade of unlimited wealth and boredom couldn't have one style.
Esben And The Witch have been in the limelight for a couple of years and this debut album of theirs "Violet Cries" proves it was worth it. Songs like "Warpath" could make them the XX of 2011, if marketing and the web can have a say. Anyway, the album is focused on being haunting and the sound is where it's supposed to be. The echoes are all over, there are unexpected twists (Battlecry/Mimicry), the idea never gets out of line. This is a concept album, then, in the manner of those great 80s dark wave albums. Thumbs up.

Violet Cries is out on January 31st on Matador.
