Dan Bejar is a man of suprises, as we have many times witnessed in his 8 previous Destroyer albums. And one of the few out there that you can call "artist", in an era that almost everything is mediocre (aka good, but not great). Destroyer's newest effort, called "Kaputt", is another twist, another opportunity to explore his taste and his totally individual style. This sound is brilliant, in the way of Frank Zappa or Prince. No boundaries, no directions, just pure music by a true master.
Take "Bay of Pigs", a monster song that goes to a million different directions and blends so many styles. Who dares to even think of such songs nowadays? Same goes for "Downtown", with the trumpet. And "Poor In Love" that is so 80s, that even the 80s originals sound fake.
"Kaputt" is immense.Lush, extremely stylish, ever-changing, sexy, nostalgic, so 80s. The first great album of 2011.
Out January 25th on Merge and you better spend money on it.
