Belle And Sebastian have such a cult status, due to their great songs and very distinctive sound. Everybody loves them for just being there, fragile, pure and so pop.
"Write About Love", their 8th LP is their second try with producer Tony Hoffer. I guess you've heard by now that superstar Norah Jones and actress Carey Mulligan are on board. Having followed the band since when their songs seemed so perfect, with lyrics that could spring out of a bleeding heart and a voice that could break glass like only Roy Orbinson could, it is awkward to listen to this album. Production doesn't help, the songs seem like a product of effort, (which is contrary to the last sentence) and some lyrics make me wonder if the band haven't lived the last 15 years. Listen to "Calculating Bimbo", i mean, is it the breakfast club all over again?. Not my cup of tea, this album.
Write About Love is out this October 11th on Rough Trade.
