Jean Michel Jarre Interview

How is it different to perform in front of millions and in front of a small crowd?

I think it's more intimidating to perform solo with a guitar in front of 2000 persons that in a larger but very well organised event. But the essence and the feelings are the same. There is a love affair between the stage and the audience.

What makes you keep on writing music?
Fellini once told me that when he started a new movie, he thought he was trying new things. But looking back at his works, he realised that he was always making the same movie, with a little differences. This is exactly the same with me.

Why don't you use lyrics?
In my early carreer, I have produced and written many pop songs. Songs are only a small part of music, though many people think that songs are the only music there is. I prefer instrumental music, because I think it offers more: a listener can make up his own perception of what this music means to him, without the words directing sth to him.

Which singer would you like to sing your songs?
Oum Kalsoum and Maria Kallas, the voices of the century.

What did your relationship with your father teach you?

Not to do the the things he did to me, to my children. They are the most important thing in my life.

Your parents recently passed away. How has this affected you?
Greatly. Apart from starting to think of Time in another way, it also made me change: when my father passed away last year, I had trouble sleeping, sth I had never had. Since my mother passed away a month ago, I sleep like a baby. I don't know why this is, but I even feel different on stage.
