Harper Simon - Berkeley Girl feat. Jena Malone

Jena Malone stars in this video. Jena Malone, as in the actress from Donny Darko, Into The Wild etc.

Harper Simon is the son of Paul Simon, so you can't avoid the similarities in the sound. But we are talking about a good song here, so enjoy.

127 Hours

James Franco is in this (too), so it's gonna be epic, no doubt. And Danny Boyle directed, so nice photography to be expected.

Lloyd Bank-Beemer Benz Or Bently Ft. Juelz Santana (Official Video)

you know this is the heaviest tune of 2010, you know it, even if you don't even know even what a Beemer even is, don't ya? it's BMW, you've been educated now

The question has been here for 15 years now, since Outkast asked the world "Benz or Beemer" back in 1995. Well, Lloyd takes to 3D, messing with the Bently, too. You know my money is good for Benz only.

money aside, big ups for the word: "got a girl named cigar called her that because she Cuban"

Mark Ronson & The Business Intl - Record Collection

Most expected album from the brits for 2010, innittt? "Record Collection" is out this September 27th on Columbia and shit is bananas.

Take "Lose It In The End", the tune of summer 2010, with Ghostface and Alex Greenwald (of Phantom Planet), so fresh it's dripping. Or the equally fun "The Bike Song" or the stylish "Bang Bang Bang".

Everybody is aboard: Spank Rock, Duran Duran, Q-Tip, D'Angelo, Wiley, Boy George, Rose Elinor Dougall (Pipettes), Kyle Falconer (The View), MNDR, Pill, Anthony Pasquale Rossomando (Klaxons, Libertines), even the London Gay Men's Chorus is in there.

Fun, fun, fun boys and girls.

Eels - Tomorrow Morning

It is impressive to see a band 13 albums in, still being at such a level and producing fresh music. This what a great band is, then.

"Tomorrow Morning" concludes the trilogy of the last albums (Hombre Lobo, End Times) of Eels and it does so in an impressive way. The album is top notch. If you wanna call it rock, ok, but it is basically many styles of music blend, with a cheerful vibe (for Eels that is), it's more about the music than the songs and even the very particular voice of Mark Oliver Everett is not such a big part of the record.

"Tomorrow Morning" is out now on Vagrant.

Underworld - Always Loved A Film (official video)

Underworld have made a wonderful video with elder guys sk8ting, graffiting, picking up chicks etc for their new track "Always Loved A Film". A joy to watch.

The song is gonna be on their upcoming new album "Barking", out this September 13th, which seems to be a very uplifting collection of songs, judging by this track and Scribble.

Bazooka - Monday (video)

this band is bound to go far. I said it first, in my former blog, I'm here to represent it. Fresh, fun, good music.

Kavinsky - Nightcall

As everybody knows, Kavinsky is above the law. His sound is always one step beyond. I've been waiting for a video for this monster of a tune called "Nightcall" for months now, but none on the way, so watch the song with footage from the awesome Terminator.

Salvador Dali - Assumpta Canaveral (1956)

Dead Confederate - Giving It All Away (with J.Mascis)

J.Mascis is in this song, so this is a good enough reason to post. Also, the video is about musical instruments being taken surgically out of people's bodies (that's a new one?)

The Thermals - Personal Life

I've always considered The Thermals as a supergoup, kind of, which is wrong, they aren't. I also was intrigued by their 2006 album "The Body, The Blood, The Machine" with Brendan Canty (of Fugazi) which had a, kind of, political stand and was king of fun, with the religion lyrics etc, but they aren't political. Anyway, they have a 5th album out this September 7th on Kill Rock Stars, it's called "Personal Life". Clever lyrics about love over matching, traditional indie-rock, anthemic sound, is what this is. They made sure it's gonna be like this, by bringing in (their old) producer Chris Walla, so they got this clear, straightforward sound. This direction is not my cup of tea, but I know a few people that would love to take this travel-back-in-time journey once again. Some songs sound classic anyway (Power Lies, I'm gonna change your life).

Stones Throw - Clouds Over The Pacific (sampler)

17 songs, the artists on this compilation are sequenced in alphabetical order: Aloe Blacc, Arabian Prince, Baron Zen, Bruce Haack, CX Kidtronik, Dam-Funk, Danimals, Guilty Simpson, James Pants, J Rocc, Madvillain, Mayer Hawthorne, MED, Steve Arrington, Strong Arm Steady, Tony Cook and Vex Ruffin, including 3 tracks produced by Madlib.

Jean-Michel Basquiat : The Radiant Child

Nosaj Thing - Coat Of Arms

currently lovin this tune

Miami Horror - Illumination

2 or more years after we first heard of the catchy name Miami Horror, this Aussie called Benjamin Plant has finally his debut ready and it is brilliant. "Illumination" is fresh 80s sound, and yes, you know this is a good thing, in a time when everything sounds so 80s but so old. This is dance music, this is radio music, this is driving music, this is good disco house, this is intelligent electronica, this is mainstream, this is fun, this is fresh, this is great music. You know it's out there, so go ahead and enjoy your money. Seriously hearting this album.

(btw, 2010 is a good year for new music, all these good albums piling up)

"Illumination" is out on EMI.

GZA's Wu-Tang Clan Documentary

Klaxons - Surfing The Void

Klaxons is one of those bands that reporters very anxiously name sth (e.x. New Rave), thus forever marking them with a color they aren't even close to. Klaxons weren't new rave (even new rave wasn't new rave). I did a show with them last year and I was disappointed: they were doing their thing, but their thing was just too british for me, as well as nothing near new rave (see: reporters). They were a pop band, maybe indie-pop, but that's all. And they wore capes in the middle of the greek summer, which was strange (i.e. excessive heat).

Put this all aside, Klaxons have a new album called "Surfing The Void". The album was highly awaited for 2008, after their triumph with their debut "Myths Of The Near Future". But it didn't work out with producers Tony Visconti and Focus (i must say it sounded interesting), so they went back to James Ford, but Polydor rejected the album and so, they ended up working with Ross Robinson, the absolute nu-metal producer!
Anyway, the album has no nu-metal sound. obviously. But, the sound is spacious, the instruments are clear, separate and everything seems in it's place, which all sounds like nu-metal ingredients.
I don't think the production is what they wanted, as their songs sound like they need sth more psychedelic, more diverse: Klaxons have their own sound (anthemic, with varied drumming, specific vocals, complex guitars), but it isn't allowed to shine in this album.

19.8.10

Arcade Fire - Ready To Start (official video)

Haven't posted about Suburbs (not my best album of 2010, mind you), it seems that everybody on earth has, so you don't need me. But, there you go: brand new video. Enjoy. I'm betting you are gonna love even this video, if you loved the album, dear hipsters.

Black Mountain - Wilderness Heart

I like Black Mountain, coz they're true to what they do: 70s rock revivalism .Their new album "Wilderness Heart" is coming out this September 14th on Jagjaguwar (as always). It was recorded in Seattle and L.A. with producers Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Boris) and Dave Sardy (LCD Soundsystem, Spoon) with whom they worked for the Spiderman 3 OST : as a result, the sound is split in two: there are songs that scream heavy, clear, rock and there are songs that are more laid back. A significant difference is that the songs are short, and this is not just a pun at "Bright Lights" (an old 17' song of theirs).
There's nothing not true in this album. These Canadians are definately all about what they do, so if classic rock is your cup of tea, drink up. I prefered the last album "In The Future" better, though.

Shit Robot - I Found Love (free download)

Shit Robot aka The Godfather of DFA has an immense album about to burst and make the whole planet dance. It's called "From The Cradle To The Rave", it is soooo fresh and it's coming out this September 21st on DFA, produced by one James Murphy.

I'll tell you all about is pretty soon, but
till then, you can grab and hold and love this awesome tune called "I FOUND LOVE" via XLR8R

Bomb The Bass - Milakia, featuring Martin Gore

Martin has contributed to the new Bomb The Bass album "Back To Light". The song "Milakia", originally written during the "Ultra" era, has now been included on the new Bomb The Bass album. From Tim Simenon: "It's a track I've always loved, but could never find a home for, really. It seemed like a perfect closer for this (new) album".

Martin co-wrote the song, and plays synth on the track as well. Check out the YouTube video on your left.

Matthew Dear - Black City

"I'm in love with ghosts"

Matthew Dear's new album has caused a stir and it's all good. "Black City" is very different, even for a guy that always goes the unexpected way: toned down, dark pop, some minimal, the lyrics are of course dark. t has taken me days to decide the words for the album, but I still have none matching. Good album, that's for sure.

You can listen to "Black City" here

UNKLE - The Answer / 2nd edition, dir: Ross Cairns

James Lavelle always has awesome videos. After the first video for The Answer, here's the second one: directed by Ross Cairns, with footage from the Relentless 'Lives of The Artists' documentaries, about legendary backcountry snowboarders Jeremy Jones and Xavier De La Rue.

p.s. can't help but re-post the immaculate video of Heaven.

The Heavy live in Greece!

The Heavy will perform for the first time in Greece this November: they will play @ Patras on the 21st, plus more dates i'll announce soon

btw, the sample of "How You Like Me Now?" is from Dyke & The Blazers' "Let A Woman Be A Woman, Let A Man Be A Man" (listen to it here). The song has been sampled so many times: 2Pac, DJ Shadow, Beck, Afrika Bambaata, Raekwon, etc.

Of Montreal - False Priest

"you took me centuries to master, in the next life i will have to learn you faster"

This album is great. Pop for 2010.

Production is off the roof (Jon Brion has touched the album with his godlike genious),fresh sounds keep coming from everywhere, lyrics are concinstently whitty (all about sex, picking up lovers, etc), the music is just great, even the featuring artists (Janelle Monae and Solange) show the quality of the album . Impressive effort by Of Montreal.

This album is for keeps and you should start bitting your nails for it. I bet Prince would be proud of a song like "Girl Named Hello" (who's your reggae woman now, I did a line with a girl named Hello). And, I bet Pavement would be proud of a song like "Famine Affair".

"False Priest" is out this September 14th on Polyvinyl records (current home of Asobi Seksu, Archithecture in Helsinki, Japandroids, Loney Dear, plus more). Prepare to spend here.

well, Tricky has gone the absolutely correct way with his new song and video: "Murder Weapon" is a nice, fun, robust tune with a video about boxing. Thumbs up
.

Man or Astroman? are back at it! Hell yeah!

i don't think i've mentioned this one, but this is one reason this holy year 2010 is so worth living.
Man or Astroman? are back at it again. For you, beloved reader, who might not be well into this band, here's the deal: they are not men, they are astromen. They are alien, but they have managed to lived between us for years now.

They were so awesome, I have spent a few of my very needed food-money on their records back in the 90s (hey Touch & Go guys, maybe you should send a gift this way).
Anyway, they are touring the US and I'm praying to the Allmighty (i.e. Diego Maradona) that I get to see them live in my time zone.

get this: the band re-formed because Jason Noble was diagnosed with cancer and the band wanted to do sth that would actually matter to him. Outmost respect to the Astromen.

M.I.A. - XXXO vs Grinderman - Heathen Child

M.I.A. has an uber-kitsch new video for the nice song XXXO. I like this video, especially after that Born Free video that everybody raved about (guys, Stress was the good one for R.Gavras, write it down so that you don't forget)

Read about the "Maya" LP here

p.s. the above can be read as a response to the outmost uber-kitsch video of a whole era, the astonishingly ridicoulous "Heathen Child" of Grinderman. No joke, this stuff is plain bad.

To Have & To Hold (documentary about vinyl)

I hope that every single one of you, my beloved readers, thought of the Deftones songs first. Otherwise, a) i don't know if there is any meaning in this blog, b) get a life. You will know all Deftones songs and you will know them by heart.

anyway, this is a must-watch documentary about vinyl loving. So, you must watch it.

Chromeo - Don't Turn The Lights On

Chromeo are so much fun. Their new video "Don't Turn The Lights On" is hilarious. You can find the song on their upcoming, third LP "Business Casual" (out Sept. 10)

been supporting since forever, it's nice to see how big they have become.

Erykah Badu - Window Seat part II, the remix featuring rick ross

ok, i heart erykah so bad, but this one is for Rick Ross. The video is wtf, a joke, whateva. Erykah, after that video with her being naked etc, wants to provoke (?) again (?), and she thought of showing herself and Rick doing a hold-up. Say what?

anyway, Rick spits the perfect verse: "people taking pictures of me, like I'm going out of style". And, at the end of the video, he wears pantyhose on his head, which is dead funny. Enjoy.

Flux Pavilion - Got 2 Know

THIS ONE IS DIRTIER THAN MY BROWSING HISTORY

How To Dress Well - Ecstasy With Jojo (Michael Jackson sample)

Decisions was the one that got me into How To Dress Well (the awesome name, too).

So, here's the new one: "Ecstasy With Jojo". Can't help but notice the Michael Jackson sample going "And We Can Share This Ecstasy" (song is Baby Be Mine from Thriller. How on earth was this sample cleared?

Skream released his album "Outside The Box" yesterday. This is the video for "Listenin' To The Records On My Wall".

2 lines:

Chemical Brothers - Further

The Chemicals always sound unique and fresh, don't they? I haven't posted about their new album "Further", though it's been out for more than a month, but it's good music so I wouldn't wanna slip on it. 7th album in for the Mancunian dance pioneers, but still "Futher" is worthy of acclaims. It's dance psychedelia (that's the obvious goal): the songs build up progressively ("Escape Velocity" is 11.50'), tricks have been used on the guitars, vocals seem to come from afar "Dissolve", the organ is very apparent, the drumming keeps the regular C.B. vibe. Bella Union's Stephanie Dosen (Massive Attack, Jose Gonzales) lends her voice in a few songs. No other vocal collaborations. Each of the 8 songs has a matching movie.

You can and must listen to "Further" at their website (push the button, get it?).

aaaand, might you be wandering about the visuals, here's the making of:

Dub Trio live in Greece this fall

Dub Trio is such an interesting case of a band. Their members are all about the music, whatever the sound might be: the drummer tours with The Fugees (yes, sir), the guitarist has recorded with Common and Mos Def (yes, sir) and the bassist has recorded with just about everybody in the rap business: Tupac, MObb Deep, Macy Gray, Lloyd Banks, 50 Cent and many more (yes sir). Their sound is what you call a blend of music styles, their last album was released
on Ipecac Records (of one Mike Patton), they always make a good show, so this one is a must see.

The Dub Trio return to Greece this fall for 2 shows:

Athens, @ An Club, October 3rd
Thessaloniki, October 4th

As always, my ongoing quest to rule the world and become the next President of the USA, I slip on a lot (i.e. just about everything). Thank God, then, for the Lords of the Universe, that I get reminded of posting my own posts. "Serapado!" is "Star Trek meets Buena Vista Social Club in this psychedelic western musical as Welsh pop legend Gruff Rhys takes us on a pan continental road trip in search of his long lost Patagonian uncle, the poncho wearing guitarist Rene Griffiths"

i want to see this so bad, i'm thinking of migrating

p.s. fellow reporters, bloggers, critics, music lovers, anybody, feel free and obliged to reproduce this post. I'm spreading the love for Gruff Rhys, so make it your duty to help love spread around and conquer the world and whateva

Camera Obscura live in Athens this fall!

Great news for happy August swimmers: Glasgow's indie-popsters Camera Obscura will perform live in Athens this October 30th @ Gagarin.

For their latest 4th album "My Maudlin Career", the band moved to the (once very important) 4AD label and finally found their way to the UK Top40 and Billboard Top100. The lush album was recorded in Sweden, with the help of Björn (of Peter Bjorn and John) and gained acclaims from all over. And since I seem to have a following of fashion bloggers (why thank you for the lovin, gurls), here's a small fashion tip: a couple of years ago, Tatty Devine made a "French Navy" bag and necklase (see here and here ) for the launching of "My Maudlin Career".

Feel free to replicate and send a kiss towards this way, shinny swimmers.

Lawrence Fishburne's 19year old daughter Montana aka Chippie D is pursuing a future in the porn industry, in order to get famous, in her own words. So, she has become a hot topic all around the globe, which probably is great for her (but not for her parents).
In her upcoming video, she stars with B.Pumper, famous porn actor and rapper. They have a sort-of preview to it, with a music video (just out), for a song called "Oh And It's Shaved", where she showcases her capabilities. His words and her body don't count for much, though.

Kanye West - Power

Kanye maybe lost in his world, but you can't match his world, can you? His new song "Power" will be on his new album “Good Ass Job”, out in November. The track samples heavily (also in the lyrics) the astonishing King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man"and is produced by none other that Symbolic One.

The video is a marvel, just because of the idea of a music video visualising fully a song (and the state of mind of it's creator, for that matter): "Power" is actually a moving painting, with Kanye portrayed as a huge statue of Zeus/Ceasar between ancient columns and mythological creatures. The idea belongs to artist and film director (of one "Demolition Man", thank you) Marco Brambilla (see his acclaimed video installation "Civilization" here) and came from Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescos.

Lyrics are Kanye typical:

"...N*gga, no one man should have all that power
The clock’s tickin’, I just count the hours
Stop trippin’, I’m trippin’ off the power
‘Til then, f*ck that, the world’s ours

And then they
(21st century schizoid man)..."

Ratatat - Drugs

A music video about teeth(!) and drugs. How on earth nobody thought of this before?

Chilly Gonzales - Ivory Tower / I Am Europe

Chilly Gonzales is the man, no doubt about that. This time around, he has done it all: his new video "I Am Europe" is also the trailer of his new movie "Ivory Tower", featuring Peaches, Tiga, Feist and other intriguing people.

The movie is wtf, by all means, as
imdb says: "Hershell & Thadeus, two chess-playing brothers and their unhealthy rivalry over both the chessboard and a woman. Hershell is a chess purist, the prodigal son, Thadeus a disciplined, ruthless competitor. After 4 nomadic years in Europe, in quixotic pursuit of 'Jazz Chess' (chess for chess' sake, no winner, no loser, only beautiful positions), Hershell returns home. Thadeus is a successful but arrogant Canadian Chess Champion engaged to marry Marsha, Hershell's former sweetheart. Hershell challenges Thaddeus in the next Canadian Chess Championship. During the final match,Thadeus is flustered by Hershell's Zen-like demeanor, and sets himself up for certain defeat. But instead, Hershell uses the principle of Jazz Chess to force a draw. Marsha admires Hershell's selfless move, but leaves - she won't be either brothers' trophy."
